Common Cat Care Mistakes

February is National Cat Health Month! Of course, our feline friends deserve to be healthy and happy all year. Fluffy isn’t hard to take care of, but she is still vulnerable to illness and injury. Your cute pet needs TLC in order to truly thrive! Read on as a Bee Cave, TX veterinarian lists some common cat care mistakes.

Letting Fluffy Roam

One of the best things you can do for Fluffy is keep her indoors. We can’t stress this enough! Kitties that go outside face many different dangers, such as weather, cars, and predators. They’re also much more likely to get lost or injured.

Not Spaying/Neutering

Getting Fluffy fixed isn’t just important in helping combat animal overpopulation. It will also curb many bad behaviors, such as spraying, escaping, and yowling kitty love songs in the middle of the night.

No Microchip

Microchips are very small, and only take a few moments to put in. However, that little device could save Fluffy’s life if she ever gets lost. Even if your pet stays indoors, she should still be microchipped. There’s no way to guarantee that someone won’t leave a door or window open, or that your kitty won’t dash out as you’re carrying something in.

Overfeeding

Did you know that well over half of our feline pals are obese? Fluffy may look cute with a few extra pounds, but that additional weight is very bad for her health.

Not Enough Veterinary Care

Cats often try to mask signs of illness. By the time you notice anything wrong, your kitty may be very sick. Contact your vet immediately if you notice anything amiss.

Skipping Petproofing

Kitties are notorious for getting into mischief. However, they don’t really know what is and is not safe for them. Remove or secure potentially-dangerous objects, like toxic plants, plastic wrappers, and small or sharp objects.

Punishment

Sooner or later, Fluffy will knock a vase off your coffee table or scratch up your sofa. Never punish your kitty for her shenanigans. This will just frighten or confuse her!

Boredom/Loneliness

We know, cats spend a lot of time sleeping. However, Fluffy does need entertainment when she’s awake. Offer your drowsy pet lots of toys, and play with her daily.
