Tips For Playing With Your Cat

Did you know that playing with your cat is one of the best things you can do for her? The physical activity Fluffy gets from running, pouncing, and jumping provides a great kitty workout. Playing is also good for mental stimulation. Kitties have to really focus to nail those tricky run/pounce/jump/meow combinations! Below, a Bee Cave, TX vet offers some advice on playing with Fluffy.

Make It Routine

Cats are very much creatures of habit. Fluffy may follow her own little schedule for naps, meals, grooming, cuddles, playtime, and more naps. Try to play with your furry buddy at roughly the same time each day.

Use Toys You Control

It’s important for Fluffy to have some toys she can use by herself. However, for kitty playtime, you’ll want to be in charge of your pet’s ‘prey,’ and controlling the toy’s movements. This will make things more fun and more challenging for your furry friend. Wand toys, laser pointers, and remote-controlled toys are all great options for this.

Discourage Direct Attacks

We know, it’s super cute when kitties pounce on our hands or toes. However, it’s best not to encourage your cat to attack you. This can become very problematic over time. After all, you don’t want Fluffy thinking of you as a giant cat toy. Those little claws are sharp! When your frisky pet pounces on you, tell her ‘No’ in a firm tone of voice. Then, walk away and ignore her.

Change It Up

Our feline pals all have their own preferences for toys and playtime. While you definitely want to focus on things Fluffy loves, it’s also good to offer your furball a variety. Some cats like catnip mice, while others prefer wand toys. (There are also kitties who would rather play with a crumpled up ball of paper, but that’s another topic.)

Let Fluffy Win

Successful ‘hunts’ can really help build Fluffy’s confidence. However, your feline friend may get discouraged if she never catches her prey. Make sure to let your kitty win sometimes.

Have Fun!

As far as we are concerned, spending time with cats is always a highlight of the day. You may find that you enjoy kitty playtime just as much as Fluffy does!
