Fido’s Fitness Regimen

Do you have an active dog, who loves to run and play? Or is your pet more of a couch potato, whose main activities are napping and begging for belly rubs? No matter what kind of dog you have, it’s important to keep Fido active. A Bee Cave, TX vet offers some tips on doggy fitness in this article.

Walks

Walking is the one activity we recommend for all dogs. Even if Fido has a yard to relieve himself in, he’ll benefit from the exercise and stimulation of daily walks. Change up your route regularly to keep things fun and fresh for your pup. This will also allow your canine buddy to sniff new patches of grass!

Running

Running can be both fun and beneficial for Fido, as long as he’s built for it. This isn’t a good option for puppies, small breeds, senior dogs, and brachycephalic dogs, as well as many large breeds. Just check with your vet before taking your furry pal running. If you get the all-clear, start slowly, to build your dog’s endurance. At first, alternate walking and running. You can gradually increase the distance your pup runs as he gets stronger. Just keep a close eye on your pooch, and watch for signs that he’s getting fatigued, hot, or thirsty. If he starts panting heavily or lagging behind, stop for a water break, and then walk back.

Swimming

Swimming is a great workout for many pooches. Some of our canine pals love the water, and take to it like furry ducks. Retrievers, poodles, and water spaniels are a few breeds that enjoy swimming. It can also be great for senior dogs, as it’s a low-impact workout. Again, you’ll want to get your vet’s okay before proceeding. Just be sure to supervise your cute pet closely when he’s in or near water. Never leave Fido unattended!

Playing

Playing is another fun way for your canine companion to get his daily workout in. If you have a furry bundle of zoom, tire your energetic pet out with games like Fetch, which will have your dog running around while you stay still. Automated ball launchers can also be great. Just make sure to get the right size!
