Summer Care for Dogs

Summer is here, and the warm weather has tails wagging all over town. Dogs love fun summer activities, like swimming, sunbathing, and playing with Frisbees! However, your canine buddy can easily overheat in his fur coat, so you’ll want to take a few precautions to keep him comfortable, happy, and safe. A Bee Cave, TX vet discusses summer dog care below.

Heat is the biggest danger for dogs at this time of year. Fido can’t sweat to cool off, and panting doesn’t always do the job. Limit your furry friend’s outdoor time around midday, when it’s hottest. Also, avoid overexerting him on sweltering days.

Many dogs are terrified of thunderstorms. If Fido hates bad weather, put him in his crate or in a quiet back room when the skies get dark. Give him a treat, and turn a radio or TV on for background noise. You can also try getting him a calming shirt. Running an unscented dryer sheet over your dog’s fur may help as well, as this can combat static cling.

Making sure your four-legged pal stays properly hydrated is very important! Keep Fido’s water bowls filled. You may want to set out more than one watering station, especially if you have a yard, a large house, and/or more than one pup. On really hot days, put a few ice cubes into your canine friend’s dish.

Fido’s fur can get hot and itchy if he has a lot of dust and dead hair in his coat. Regular brushings will help keep him cool.

Paw Care

If you’ve ever walked barefoot on hot tar, you know it’s pretty unpleasant. Keep your pooch on soft ground as much as you can, especially after he’s been swimming. Paw balm will also help protect those furry feet.

There are few things Fido loves more than treats, except perhaps for car rides, belly rubs, walks, and toys. Offer your furry bff some doggy ice cream. You can buy it in pet stores, or make your own. Look online for dog-safe recipes.

This one can’t be repeated too many times. Never leave your canine buddy in a locked car, even for just a few minutes. Temperatures reach deadly levels in cars very quickly!
