Keeping Kitties Cool

The dog days of summer are approaching fast. However, we’re not going to talk about Fido’s summer plans in this article. Instead, we’re focusing on Fluffy. It isn’t always easy for our feline buddies to beat the heat. After all, kitties are wearing fur coats! Read on as a Bee Cave, TX vet discusses keeping your cat cool.

Hydration

Making sure your feline pal stays properly hydrated is very important. You may want to get your kitty an automated waterer or a pet fountain. On hot days, you can drop an ice cube into Fluffy’s bowl, to cool the water down a bit.

Ice Cube Hockey

Speaking of ice cubes, there’s another way they can keep your furball cool. Cats use their paw pads to regulate their temperature, so Fluffy may love batting an ice cube around on the floor! (Then again, she may just look at it and then give you that unimpressed look kitties do so well. You just never know with cats.)

Beauty Rituals

Cats are pretty good about keeping themselves clean, but that doesn’t mean they can’t use some help now and then. Brushing your furry little diva will get the dead hair, dust, and dander out of her coat, which will help her stay cooler.

Hammock

Ever wonder why hammocks are so closely associated with tropical islands? They stay cooler than regular beds, because air can flow beneath them. To make Fluffy her own little hammock, you’ll need a table with four legs, such as a coffee table, and a piece of sturdy fabric. Cut the material so that it’s a little smaller than the table top, and attach the corners to the legs. Voila!

Climate Control

We always recommend keeping cats indoors, but this is particularly important in bad or hot weather. Keep your feline friend indoors, in rooms cooled by fans or AC. If you let Fluffy roam through your house, she’ll naturally seek out the coolest spot. Kitties are very, very good at getting comfortable!

Cool Snacks

Who says kitties can’t enjoy a cold treat? Fluffy can have some chilled canned tuna in water, or some shredded deli meat. You can also give your feline friend a nice cold bowl of cat milk or sodium-free broth.
