7 Great Ways to Keep Fido Cool This Summer

As the dog days of summer approach, you’ll want to take steps to keep your canine buddy cool and comfortable. Heat can be dangerous for dogs! Here, a Westlake Hills, TX vet offers tips on helping Fido beat the heat.

Cold Snacks

Who doesn’t love a cold treat on a sweltering day? Fido can enjoy a cool bowl of sodium-free broth, some doggy ice cream, or an ice cube or two. You can also make your canine pal pupsicles by freezing kibble, doggy treats, or shredded meat in sodium-free broth or water, using an ice cube tray.

Water, Water Everywhere

Make sure Fido always has plenty of water. You may want to put out multiple stations, especially if you have more than one pet or your dog spends a lot of time in the yard. Wash your furry pal’s bowls daily, so bacteria doesn’t form on them. Your pooch may also appreciate an automated waterer.

Cool Bedding

Consider getting Fido a hammock bed. These stay cooler than regular beds, as they allow air to flow beneath them. They’re also great for outdoors, as many of them are easy to just hose off. Your pooch may also like having a cold water bottle in his bed, beneath a towel.

Summer Haircut

Your furry buddy may be cooler with a cute summer haircut. However, check with your vet first: a summer ‘do isn’t a good choice for every pooch.

Kiddie Pool

There is nothing cuter than seeing a dog splash and play in a kiddie pool. Fido may also enjoy playing in the spray from a sprinkler!

Climate Control

As a rule of thumb, if it’s too hot out for you, it’s too hot for your dog. Limit Fido’s outdoor time when temperatures rise, especially during the hottest parts of the day. Walk him in the mornings and evenings, when it’s cooler. The rest of the time, let him relax in rooms cooled by fans or air conditioners.

Regular brushing will remove dead fur and dander from your four-legged friend’s coat, which will help him stay cooler in summer and warmer in winter. (Bonus: less dog fur everywhere. You’ll be grabbing that fur with a brush before it gets stuck to everything!)
