Tips for Fighting Fleas

Spring has sprung! As the warmer weather returns, so will fleas and ticks. While insects and parasites are unfortunately a year-round nuisance here in Texas, they tend to come out in droves in hot weather. These disgusting critters can transmit other parasites, as well as dangerous diseases, to both pets and people. In this article, a Bee Cave, TX vet offers advice on fighting fleas.

Parasite Control Products

First things first: be sure to keep up with your four-legged friend’s parasite control products. There are many different types of products to choose from, from topical drops to sprays to collars. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Vacuuming regularly is one of the best things you can do to keep fleas out of your home. We recommend vacuuming high traffic areas and your pet’s favorite spots daily, and doing more thorough cleanings about once a week. When you finish, immediately empty the canister into a plastic bag, then seal the bag and take it outside. This will stop any eggs from hatching inside your home.

Did you know that keeping your lawn neatly mowed can help make your yard unattractive to fleas and ticks? These guys like to hide in tall grasses, so a well-kept yard isn’t all that inviting to them. We also recommend trimming back any hedges or trees that touch your house, and cutting back any overhanging branches, so your yard gets as much light as possible. Another thing that can help is to put a simple three-foot border around your property. Fleas and ticks hate being exposed to sunlight, and may turn away rather than cross it. Last but not least, if you have trees or plants that bear produce, pick up any fallen fruit. They can attract wild animals that carry fleas and ticks.

Battling Infestations

If you are trying to fight a flea infestation, you’ll want to wash all of your pet’s bedding weekly. Use hot water, unscented detergent, and the hottest dryer cycle you have. You may also want to make sure to keep clothes and laundry off the floor. If you have a dog, and often take Fido on car rides, vacuum your vehicle as well.
