Adopting a Shelter Pet

Did you know that April 30th is Adopt A Shelter Pet Day? There are many reasons to get your new furry friend at a shelter, rather than from a pet store or breeder. You’ll be saving a life and promoting great animal welfare. Plus, you’ll make a friend for life! Here, a Bee Cave, TX vet discusses adopting shelter pets.

Deciding

Think long and hard before adopting a new pet. Dogs and cats can live 15 years, or even longer. Make sure you can commit to taking care of your new buddy for their entire lifespan. If you’re not sure that you can make a long-term commitment, consider giving a sweet senior pet a great retirement home.

Meeting Your Pet

Shelters are overflowing with sweet, lovable animals in need of good homes. If you are looking for a specific breed, color, age, size, or personality, there’s a good chance you’ll find it in a shelter. Of course, sometimes people only need to take one look at a furry face to know they’ve found the right pet. At other times, deciding can be really tough. Spend some time with your potential pet before making a final decision.

Shopping

You’ll need to do some shopping before the big day. Your furry buddy will need food, treats, bedding, toys, dishes, and grooming supplies. We also recommend getting a good crate or carrier. If you have a dog, you’ll need to pick up a leash and harness or collar. Fluffy, on the other hand, will require a litterbox, a scratching post, and some kitty furniture. Put these things in a quiet back room, so your pet can have a safe, comfy place to settle in and relax.

Settling in

Being in a shelter is very scary for pets. Dogs and cats get very attached to their owners, and are often frightened, sad, and lonely without them. Your new pet may sleep quite a bit at first. This is normal, as they will need to recuperate from the stress of being in a shelter. Don’t force attention on your new furry friend. Just offer toys, treats, good food, veterinary care, and love. With time, patience, and great TLC, you’ll have purrs or tail wags in no time.
