Respect Your Cat Day

Did you know that March 28th is Respect Your Cat Day? Cats are very small, but they certainly do have a way of wrapping us around their paw. But how do you show a cat proper respect? Read on as a local Westlake Hills, TX vet offers some helpful tips.

Good Food

Proper nutrition will go a long way towards keeping your kitty healthy and purring. Get the best pet food brand you can afford. Be careful not to overfeed your pet, however: if Fluffy becomes obese, her health will suffer.

Fun Toys

Kitties can get bored and restless with nothing to do all day. Make sure your furball has lots of fun toys to push under the sofa. We also recommend getting your cat some pet furniture. Fluffy loves to explore small spaces, and she is also very fond of heights. Cat towers are great, but you can also give your furry buddy a pet tent or kitty condo. If you are working with a tight budget, look online for great DIY options.

Clean Litterbox

While cleaning the litterbox isn’t the funnest part of having a cat, it is very important. Our feline buddies hate dirty bathrooms! We recommend scooping daily, and doing more thorough cleanings once a week. You may find that stackable litter boxes make this task a bit easier.

Proper Veterinary Care

Cats are quite independent, but they need proper veterinary care in order to stay healthy. We recommend that kitties be microchipped and spayed or neutered while they are kittens. It’s also important to keep up with your pet’s exams, vaccinations, and parasite control. At home, watch for signs of sickness. Kitties are very secretive about showing symptoms, so it can be easy to miss them. Some common red flags are hiding, poor grooming, vomiting, diarrhea, and unusual behavior or vocalizations. Your furball may be very sick before you notice anything wrong, so contact your vet immediately if you see any of these warning signs.

Kitties are very affectionate, and get extremely attached to their humans. In fact, some of these little cuddlebugs want nothing more than to be petted 24/7! Spend time with Fluffy every day: pet her, play with her, and let her snooze on your lap.
