Dog Training Tips

It’s that time of year again! Summer is winding down and the kids are headed back to school. If your dog hasn’t mastered basic doggy obedience commands yet, he may need to go back to school as well! Read on as a local Bee Cave, TX vet offers some tips on training Fido.

Class Furriculum

All dogs should know simple obedience commands. The five most important ones are Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. Make sure Fido has these down before you move on to showing him cute tricks or more advanced commands. Teach your canine pal one at a time, and don’t move on until he has each one mastered.

Environment

Choose a spot that is quiet and free of distractions to work with your furry friend. Down the road, it may be beneficial to work with your adorable student in a busy environment, but for now, opt for a classroom that doesn’t have squirrels in it.

Schedules

Try to work with your canine buddy for about 15-20 minutes a day. This will be much better for Fido than long weekly classes.

Rewards

If you give your furry student a report card with a gold star on it, he’ll probably either try to eat it or just give you an adorable confused look. In order to let Fido know he is doing well, you’ll want to reward him with something more tangible, such as treats. Use small snacks, like bits of kibble, cut up hot dogs, or shredded deli meat.

Pawsitive Thoughts

Don’t try to train Fido if you are feeling grumpy, sad, or unsettled. Dogs are very intuitive, and can easily pick up on our emotions. You don’t want your furry pupil getting a bad impression about training! It’s also very important to keep things positive. Never punish or reprimand your cute pet for not picking something up quickly enough. Dogs don’t understand punishment, so negative reinforcement can easily backfire. Focus on rewarding your four-legged pal for making progress.

Be Consistent

When teaching your canine companion vocal commands, be sure to use the same phrasing each time. For instance, if you say ‘Lay down’ one day and ‘Fido, lay down right now’ the next, you may end up confusing your adorable student!
